Chapter 20

“Dad? Dad, is that you?”

The man in the doorway didn’t answer, but the boy knew that it wasn’t his father.

He was too tall, too wide, to be his dad.

“Your dad’s not here, son.”

The only illumination in the room came from the hall, but the man was so large that the light that filtered in made it look as if he were glowing. To the boy, it was almost as if the figure wasn’t actually there, that it wasn’t a person, so much as the absence of light.

The man took two steps forward.

“Don’t be scared, boy.”

The boy might have only been eight years old, but he was smart enough to know that if someone told you not to be scared, someone who was creeping into your room in the middle of the night, then that was exactly what you should be.

“Your father’s not here, and he’s not coming back.”

The boy swung the blankets off and tried to stand, with the intention of running. He knew that he had to get out of here, that if he stayed, something bad would happen.

But he couldn’t get up.

The boy looked down at himself and then he started to scream.

His legs ended just below the knee. Where his shin, and then ankles and feet should have been, were only ragged, bloody stumps and the tips of gleaming bone.

The man in the doorway laughed.

“No need to scream, boy. There’s no need to scream.”
